Wenzhou Hair Embroidery which originated in Yuan Dynasty has been passed down to the present. It is enjoying the fame of “an art unmatched in the world”.  It is a representative project of national intangible cultural heritage. The main inheritance base is located in Wenzhou University (Hair Embroidery Research Institute of Wenzhou University).

Hair is endowed with rich cultural connotation in traditional culture. There are strong folk connotation and unique charm of emotion expression in hair embroidery works. As the artistic expression of love, kinship and friendship, hair embroidery works are considered to be the handicrafts closest to human emotions. Wenzhou Hair Embroidery is a folk handicraft with the material of natural color of human hair and the tool of needles. It follows the rule of formative art to create vivid images on the smoothly-stretched satin. As far as hair is concerned, hair embroidery can be divided into two types: one is monochrome hair embroidery based on the hair of the same race; the other is colored hair embroidery based on the hair of different ethnic groups (Combined embroidery or background color).

Wenzhou Hair Embroidery is based on the creative idea of "applying needles according to objects and adjusting methods according to the mind". It creates images skillfully through the density transformation of stitches and superimposed multiple layers. It is different from the dense-stitch background color of the traditional silk embroidery.
